This is the first hole on the front nine with any bunkers. Rumoured to be a legacy of designer Sir George Sitwell who decreed that no bunkers should be visible from the hall as it would spoil the view of what was effectively 'his garden'. Added in the last 20 years the bunkers are perfectly situated to both catch slightly wayward drives and the under hit approach shot. With a green sloping towards the fairway and a false front the approach shot needs to be up to the flag.

Dog leg left. A good positional drive or iron missing the fairway bunkers on the right side will set you up with a straight forward shot to the green. Green slopes from back to front.
